Exploring and Learning [July 4- 9, 2015]

Well since I’ve last written, many-a-things have happened!
Blurry because it was misty!

I have been learning so much, both about medicine, myself and Jesus. It’s hard to really describe what its like to be here. I’m surrounded by people who constantly challenge me; to be a more sincere servant of Christ, to strive to be the best I can be at everything God allows me to do and to really, deeply love others.

I’m adjusted much better to living here. In my last post I tried to convey some of the unexpected challenges I’m facing here. Maybe it sounded superficial, but I just don’t want to convey the idea that everything is amazing and perfect, if it isn't. My heart for this blog is for people to journey with me where I am and the only way to do that is to be upfront. Since then however, God has been so gracious to me. I think I have finally got the trick of getting hot water, and have not been really sick for almost 2 weeks now- really thankful.

Medically, I’ve been learning tons. I find myself scribbling down things constantly during patient rounds and am getting the opportunity to use a few of the skills that I’ve learned! Highlight so far has been giving some routine physical examinations, obstetrical exams and casting. Really bread and butter stuff that is such a joy to be able to do! I felt like I was actually contributing something- always a good feeling! J Also, got to see a newborn with a cleft palate, a man with pulmonary TB, large hand abscesses and a teeny tiny 30-week newborn! Keeps it interesting! Learning so much!

Another highlight was an amazing conversation I had with an American girl whom I'll call Amanda. We'd gotten to know each other over about a week, chatting about random things. Spirituality came up frequently but I didn't have a chance to really sit down and talk with her until near the end of the week. We were chatting and she mentioned that  she was going to be staying at a Hindu mediation ashram following her time here. I was intrigued and so I asked her more about her spiritual background. Long-story short, I got to share with her the good news of Christ and it was awesome. It was so cool because it was the last time we'll probably ever see each other again and with her leaving to a very intense spiritual place the next day, God's timing was impeccable. Maybe her thoughts will be turned to what we talked about when she's meditating? Maybe it was the first seed or another till of soil that is slowing turning to Christ. Who knows, but it was such a cool conversation.

It’s really striking to me how thankful people are for the limited healthcare that they do receive. It seems that people recognize that even receiving care is something that many others don’t have. I’ve yet to hear a complaint. Honestly. It’s remarkable. In part I think it’s also because the physicians do their absolute best with what resources they have and strive to really serve the patients to the best of their ability. Patients really do feel cared for. We have many physicians that model this back home, but it is so plain to me here. What a model for me as a future physician.

It’s been great getting to explore the landscape little by little. I ventured to a local church and after meeting some lovely ladies, we all went for dinner at a local lady’s home! It was fantastic fellowship and food! I felt so welcomed and it made me really think about how I treat new people in my church back home. How hard is it really to start up a conversation with a new person? I appreciated it so much! What a welcome we can give people by simply asking if they’re new, and if they’d want to share a meal. Anyways, afterwards, the ladies took me all around showing me the most common and useful spots to know. It was SO appreciated! Definitely didn’t want to be wandering around looking like a lost tourist haha, this way I have rough idea of where exactly things are.

Who knew that India was really into tea? The British influence still lingers around and we have chai (a general term for tea) every day at 10am and 4pm, rigidly. It's so sweet and milky, a little different than usually make, but I think I'll be keeping tea time when I get back home!

This was just cool. A veggie dinner in a potato bowl. The foodie inside me was impressed, and it was SO tasty.
